The USMNT will look to get going in the hex round of World Cup qualifying as it plays on the road Tuesday against Costa Rica. Here’s everything to know about the second match of the fifth and final round of CONCACAF qualifying and our live blog.
When: Tuesday at 9:05 p.m. ET
TV: beIN Sports
Stream: beIN Sports Connect
Last time out: The U.S. surrendered a late goal and lost at home to rival Mexico, the first home WCQ loss in 15 years. Costa Rica went on the road and earned a fine 2-0 win at Trinidad and Tobago.
Where’s Tim? You’ll notice that Tim Howard, the USMNT’s star goalkeeper, won’t play in this one. He isn’t even with the team. Howard was ruled out of the match due to an adductor injury and has returned to his club, the Colorado Rapids. Brad Guzan is expected to start in his place.
Matchup to watch: The U.S. attackers against Costa Rica’s goalkeeper, Keylor Navas. The Real Madrid goalkeeper is arguably the best goalkeeper in the Western Hemisphere, ahead of guys like Claudio Bravo, Tim Howard and others. Thanks to his cat-like quickness, the Costa Rican keeper can pull off brilliant saves. Beating him is going to be tricky, and winning on the road is going to be just as tough. The U.S. is 0-8-1 all-time at Costa Rica.
Predicted starting XIs: USA – Guzan; Yedlin, Gonzalez, Brooks, Johnson; Bradley, Kljestan, Pulisic, Bedoya; Wood, Altidore; CRC – Navas; Acosta, Calvo, Watson, Matarrita; Gamboa, Azofeifa, Borges, Bolanos; Ruiz, Urena.
Prediction: Costa Rica 2, USMNT 1. The U.S. has never won at Costa Rica in WCQ, so the history continues as Navas comes up big.
